Fantastica giornata nel parco di Etosha, a contatto con una fauna straripante, presente ovunque, fin davanti le ruote. Elefanti, zebre, giraffe, antilopi, perfino due leoni, dormienti all’ombra nel canicolare meriggio. Una sensazione di full immersion nella natura più vera, circondati da un mondo animale non ostile, che pure lotta ogni momento per sopravvivere. Il parco è grande quasi come tutta la Sicilia e circonda una depressione che raramente diventa lago; ma l’acqua c’è, la vegetazione è ricca. Attorno alle pozze vengono a bere animali di tutte le specie, rispettando quasi dei turni e rimanendo comunque guardinghi. Ai margini dei lodge bene attrezzati c’è la pozza d’acqua artificiale, la tribunetta per gli spettatori e l’illuminazione notturna. Avremo fotografie incredibili, la nostra autostorica accanto agli elefanti, mentre dà la precedenza a struzzi in fila indiana o a famiglie di zebre e giraffe. La tappa è stata di semplice trasferimento, dentro il parco bisogna andare piano e – raccomandazione numero uno – mai scendere dalla propria macchina. Non ce ne sarebbe stato bisogno: gli animali ci respiravano accanto. La nostra Mercedes continua ad andar bene, è provvidenziale che ce ne siano altre dello stesso modello, tutte con ricambi buoni. Noi ne abbiamo prestati un paio, poi c’è servito condensatore nuovo: il baratto funziona.
WONDERFUL ETOSHA
We’ve had a great day in Etosha, today; we came into close contact with such a luxuriant fauna that we had animals standing right beside the wheels of our car. Elephants, zebras, giraffes, antelopes, we even met two lions dozing in the shade to shelter from the oppressive hot. It was like plunging into pure nature; you are surrounded by an animal world that, though constantly fighting for survival, is never hostile. The park is almost as big as Sicily and stretches round a depressed area that sometimes turns into a little lake; anyhow they do have water here and the vegetation is quite rich. Animals of all kinds gather around the ponds in search of water, coming and going in an almost scheduled alternation, at the same time keeping a watchful eye. At the sides of the well-equipped lodge we have an artificial pond, a little stand for watchers and the night light system. We’ll take amazingly beautiful pictures of it: our old car standing next to the elephants as it gives way to groups of ostriches, families of zebras and giraffes queuing up. The lap today was almost simply a transfer; when you are travelling in the park you have to move slowly and, what is most important, never get off your car. You don’t even need to, after all: you get so close to the animals that you can hear them breathing. Our Mercedes is still going very well. Luckily for us there are several Mercedes of the same kind and they all have good spare parts; we’ve lent a couple and borrowed one: a new condenser. Bartering works indeed!
